Keeping Busy

Well April was a busy busy month!
Costumed 3 dance shows:

DHPCo’s ‘The Stranger’ (pt. 1)

Nina Haft’s ‘To Begin with the Ending Already in Sight’

University of San Francisco’s Spring Dance Show

usf S13 dance

In the evenings I did find some time to relax and finish up some knitting projects.

knit hand towel (2)

Made this hand towel using Martha Stewart’s Cotton/Hemp Yarn.
The basic pattern texture came from the Pop Knitting book.

Today I finished up a little knit tomato from Amigurumi Knits.
The coloring is inspired by the Cherokee Purple Heirloom tomatoes (Chris’s favorite).

I also finished up a sweater that I started in early February.
Since the weather has cooled down again I should be able to get some pictures soon!

DHPCo ‘The Stranger’ Preview and IndieGoGo Campaign

I am currently in the process of designing and constructing costumes for the 6th home season of David Herrera Performance Company:

‘The Stranger’ Part 1

“Due to the success of last year’s work, we are happy to announce that this season DHPCo. was awarded a Zellerbach Family Foundation Grant for the creation of the Stranger (Part 1)’ as well as commissioned to show part of the new work at the University of California, Santa Cruz through their Theater Arts Dept. in May 2013 but WE STILL NEED YOU!
In Addition to our new work we continue our lineage of presenting and helping produce other local companies.  This home season we invited one of the areas newest additions Requisite Dance (April 19-21) & local favorite PUSH Dance Company (April 26-28) to join our bill.  Both companies will present premieres.Take a moment to check out our Indiegogo and also share it with your friends.  All the tools are there.  Get perks, make a contribution, or simply follow updates. If enough of us get behind it, we can make the Stranger, (Part 1)’happen!
If you prefer to make a tax-deductible donation please visit our Support page on our company website to donate through our fiscal sponsor Dancers Group of San Francisco.

I am very excited to be working with such a talented group of artists.
The support of a donation or just coming to check out some great bay area dance in April will be much appreciated!

Here is a little preview of what they are working on…

Hope to see you in April!
p.s. I might post some costume sneak peaks after the cast’s 1st fitting on Wed.

Plaid Shirt with Pearl Snaps

plaid shirt with pearl snaps (3)
Last year I realized I had never sewn myself a basic collared shirt.
I picked up this cute shirting fabric from Fabrix (over in the Inner Richmond district) and took on the challenge of plaid.

I am pretty happy with how it all went together.
Side and front plaids all match up beautifully.

plaid shirt with pearl snaps (2)
Look how nice the collar/back lines up!
However, next time I will have to get the plaid on the sleeves to line up better with the front/back.

I am happy this fabric was screaming for pearl snaps.
(no button holes! yay!)
Always feels good to use a hammer during the final step of construction!

Completed – Striped Sweater and a fun little critter

Haven’t been sewing much lately.
Instead I have been knitting!
I got this vinatge knitting pattern off of the blog Molly Made.

After reading through the pattern I decided to attempt to knit my fist sweater.
It took me a little less than 2 months to complete.
(would have been done sooner if I wasn’t working on 3 projects at once)
You can see pictures of the work in progress on my Ravelry page.

Here is the final product…

 1st sweater (front)

1st sweater (back)

I also recently completed knitting a fun little critter.
I received Amigurumi Knits for Christmas and couldn’t wait to try some of the patterns out.

For my first project I chose the sea star…

star fish (top)

star fish (underbelly)

Now I haven’t given up on sewing.
In fact, I have almost completed a new shirt.
Just need to hammer in some pearl snaps 🙂
Hopefully, I will have photos up soon.

Retro Inspired Holiday Dress

The owners of Mendel’s Far Out Fabrics liked my Halloween dress so much they asked me to make a holiday dress to display in the store.
(Luckily, I will get it back in time to wear for Christmas!)

The bodice is made with Kona Cotton and the skirt is wool (or wool blend? the bolt didn’t say…)

(Sorry for the dark/golden pictures.
I just finished it up tonight and it is going up in the store tomorrow.)

I have been obsessed with adding piping to everything.
Plus, it really helped make the cotton bodice look more tailored.

I also put hidden pockets in the skirt.

Lining up my hounds-tooth stripes 🙂

Oh, and this wool was a perfect excuse to put my serger to use!
I am loving how clean and flat all of my edges are.

Is anyone else making a festive dress/outfit for the holidays?
